Myanmar Returns to The Dark Ages

In connection with the military coup in Myanmar at the beginning of this week, the Thai-Norwegian Chamber of Commerce is organising a highly relevant webinar titled “MYANMAR RETURNS TO THE DARK AGES” on Wednesday, 10 February 2021.

The webinar features former BBC Correspondent Larry Jagan, one of the foremost experts on Myanmar. His views and insights will help participants to understand the current situation on ground in Myanmar and predict in which direction the situation is developing.

What is happening and the future for Myanmar?

Myanmar’s army seized power last week in a surprise military coup in early morning raids detaining de-facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi, the President Win Myint and other politicians. A state of emergency was declared – for a year – after which fresh elections were promised. Now much of the international community has condemned the coup –apart from the usual stalwart in Asia – China, India and ASEAN. Sanctions are definitely in the pipeline and Myanmar seems to be headed back to the future: authoritarian rule, isolation and pariah status.

Larry Jagan is currently a freelance correspondent, independent analyst, journalism trainer and media consultant based in Bangkok but regularly visiting Yangon. He is best known for his coverage of Myanmar – which can regularly be found in the Bangkok Post. Before that he was the BBC’s news and current affairs editor for Asia – and the BBC’s Myanmar correspondent for more than 20 years. He is also the author of two books on Myanmar, and numerous academic papers. He will unravel;

  • What caused the timing of the coup?
  • Could it have been averted?
  • What is the Lady’s future?
  • Will the civil society protests have an impact: will they be sustained?
  • Can we expect a bloody end to it all like 1988?
  • What impact will the new Cabinet have on policies?
  • Can we expect a continuation of the current liberalization?
  • How will it affect foreign business and international investors?
  • What do business need to heed as the situation unfolds?
