Connectivity has great potential to enrich lives around the world, particularly for children and young people, who are eager to learn. However, with there are also new challenges for young people to navigate online, including cyberbullying, exposure to potentially harmful content, attempts at fraud, distribution of child sexual abuse materials, and more. Telenor aims to stimulate a supportive ecosystem that can address the risks and grow the digital resilience of young people.
With increasing online activity also comes associated risks in the realm of online safety. Those accessing the internet for the first time may not have the ability to separate good content from the bad, or real information from fraudulent. Furthermore, a survey also conducted by our premium members, dtac in Thailand found that 91% of children had experienced some form of online bullying, with heightened risks for girls and women (SDG 5), this can have a negative impact on emotional and mental health. The ability to navigate the wide cyberspace safely and securely is an important factor in promoting connectivity for all, particularly children.
We have actively been working alongside partners including UNICEF and Plan International to provide child online safety in Asia for over 10 years, and in 2020 we were able to achieve our goal of training 4 million children across our markets in online safety, empowering them to make the right decisions on how to engage on the internet in a confident and responsible manner.
We have provided parents, teachers, and children with training related to cyberbullying and online risks in places like Norway, Denmark, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, including guidance on parental controls, access to helplines that can support children who have been exposed to harm, mechanisms for reporting illegal and harmful content, and efforts to prevent the spread of child sexual abuse. Digiworld, is our interactive, online learning resource designed to help children identify online risks, negative behavior, hate speech, and fake news while promoting a kind and respectful online presence.
